FINISHING FLOORS - To be done after a scrub and recoat or a strip.

Tools - PPE | Wet Floor Signs| Garbage Liners | Extension Cords | Floor Fan | Finish Mop and Handle | Bucket and Wringer | Floor Finish

    Description
Gather all of your Tools. Use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Place wet floor or caution Signs in appropriate areas. Prepare your Equipment and pour your finish into a lined bucket. Apply Finish with a finish mop. Outline the area that you are going to finish. Fill in the area you outlined with a figure 8 pattern. If mop begins to drag, Flip Mop to get more finish. Wait for approximately 10 minutes before putting a fan to the floor to accelerate drying. When floor is dry to the touch, between 30 - 45 minutes, reapply finish. Clean Up the equipment.

    PPE
What to do: Wear protective equipment, such as goggles or safety glasses, gloves.
Why: To protect yourself from chemical contact.
Reason: To reduce the risk of having an adverse reaction to chemical that one has come into contact with.

    Signs
What to do: Place wet floor signs in appropriate areas, and barrier tape where needed.
Why: To alert passers by that there is a wet floor or that there is work in progress.
Reason: To protect passers by from slip and fall incidents.

    Equipment
What to do: Line a bucket with a fresh clean plastic garbage liner. Pour finish into bucket.
Why: To pour finish into a container and keep it clean.
Reason: The liner keeps the finish separate from the bucket and any contaminates and keeps the bucket clean.

    Apply Finish
What to do: Use a clean finish mop and dip it into the finish. Wring out bottom half of mop.
Why: A clean mop is free of debris, and by wringing out the mop half way you ensure a nice even coat of finish.
Reason: Clean mops will not leave lint or residue streaks. The even coat will build the floors finish.

    Outline area
What to do: Outline the area you are going to complete with a U shape.
Why: Breaks up the floor into sections.
Reason: Makes applying the finish easier.

    Fill in area
What to do: Use a figure 8 pattern to fill the U shape in.
Why: The figure 8 pattern will crisscross itself to avoid holes or patches of unfinished floor.
Reason: The figure 8 allows the mop to move freely without ever lifting or reapplying the mop to the floor.

    Flip Mop
What to do: When swinging the mop in a figure 8 pattern it may be necessary to flip or roll the mop over.
Why: To utilize the finish on the other side of the mop.
Reason: So you do not have lift the mop off of the floor and create a gap in the finish.

    Wait
What to do: Allow floor to dry at least 10 minutes before putting a fan to the floor. If you do not have a fan, allow floor to air dry.
Why: The fan will facilitate dry time. The ten minutes will prevent the fan from creating ripples in the finish.
Reason: If the floor is not dry to the touch when reapplying finish you will create marks in the finish that can only be removed by stripping.

    Clean Up
What to do: Rinse and wash all equipment.
Why: So the equipment will be clean and uncontaminated for the next use.
Reason: Clean equipment represents the people that use it.

If need be, reapply another coat of finish after floor has dried.
